2 kitchen workers did not have health cards: Officials
Kochi: Health and municipality authorities have found that the kitchen at the NCC camp at KMM College in Thrikkakara, where 86 students experienced discomfort due to suspected food poisoning on Monday, was being operated under unhygienic conditions.Meanwhile, the officiating additional director general of NCC has ordered an investigation into the incident. A committee led by Brigadier Suresh G, NCC Group Commander of Kollam, was appointed to submit a report.The health department on Tuesday collected water samples and food samples, besides stool samples of the affected cadets. Officials found that two out of the seven workers in the kitchen did not have the mandatory health cards. Meanwhile, all the students who sought treatment at the medical college left the hospital by Tuesday morning.On Monday night, high drama prevailed at the college where the camp was held, as agitated parents broke open the gates and protested. Thrikkakara police registered a case against two persons on charges of assaulting an officer of the 21 Kerala NCC Battalion at the camp. The accused were only named as ‘identifiable persons' in the FIR. Sources alleged that among the accused were an SFI district secretariat member and a BJP councillor in Kalamassery municipality.According to the FIR, the two accused threatened and then attacked Lieutenant Colonel Karneyil Singh, the camp commandant. An accused, as per the FIR, stabbed the petitioner with a sharpened object on his cheek, neck, and back.NCC has also informed that the camp would restart on Dec 26. According to NCC, the kitchen and store were inspected regularly by the camp commandant and the junior superintendent during camp days.Principal secretary to probe food poisoning: The principal secretary of higher education will investigate the food poisoning incident at the NCC camp at KMM College, Thrikkakara. Minister of higher education and social justice R Bindu, announced that principal secretary Ishita Roy has been tasked with conducting the investigation and submitting an urgent report.
