KANPUR: Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (

UPPCB

) has ordered the closure of 122 tanneries in Kanpur's Jajmau area. In August, these tanneries were permitted to operate with 50% capacity.

The decision was taken following the report of the monitoring committee of the National Green Tribunal that polluted water from these tanneries was being drained into the Ganga.

SB Franklin, regional pollution control board officer, confirmed that his office received the order on Thursday and the same would be served on the tanneries.

Sources said UPPCB had taken this decision on the report of the Ganga Monitoring Action Committee that pumping stations were not mixing sewer water and pumping tannery waste straight into the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CEPT), from where the same was going into the river. As per procedure, Jal Nigam used to add sewer water in tannery waste and dilute it before pumping it into CETP for treatment. UPPCB sources said the tanneries will remain closed till Jal Nigam submits its report that it has completed desilting of drains. The report would then be verified by UPPCB. Jal Nigam has sought time till October 31 for cleaning the sewer lines.
