Uttar Pradesh: IIT-Kanpur student drowns in Ganga while taking dip with friends

KANPUR: A student pursuing B.Tech in civil engineering at IIT-Kanpur drowned in the Ganga on Sunday morning while taking bath along with his friends.
The deceased student has been identified as Chanchal Kumar.
Police officials said that the student hailed from Rajasthan and his family had been informed about the tragedy. The postmortem of the body is likely to be conducted on Monday after which it would be handed over to the family.
A group of around 10 students from IIT-Kanpur went to Atal Ghat near Ganga Barrage and a few of them decided to take a dip in the Ganga.Chanchal slipped into deep waters along with another student and could not be rescued, while the other one was somehow saved.
The incident has disturbed fellow students of Chanchal who are shocked and distressed over the tragic loss.
The institute issued a statement saying a group of students went to the Atal Ghat at the Ganga Barrage on Sunday morning. A few students took a bath in the Ganga where Chanchal Kumar, a BTech civil engineering student, drowned at around 7am.
The city police immediately dispatched a group of professional divers and took charge of the search and rescue operation. Chanchal’s body was pulled from the river at about 11.30am and taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
IIT-K authorities further stated that Chanchal Kumar’s parents have been informed about the tragedy and they are on their way to Kanpur. The institute said it mourns the untimely loss of a bright young mind and prays that God gives his family and friends the strength to bear the huge loss.
