KANPUR: An elderly couple, who begged for a living and were sleeping on the footpath near Parmat temple in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur city, were crushed to death by a four-wheeler in the early hours of Saturday.

The incident took place around 5am and police, on being alerted, rushed to the location, secured the bodies and initiated an investigation. They sent the bodies for a post-mortem. According to reports, the victims, both in their 80s, were beggars near Parmat temple and slept on the roadside nearby. Early Saturday, an unidentified vehicle struck them, causing their death on the spot.


CCTV being scanned to identify vehicle, driver

Police identified them as Nirbhay Chand alias Sitaram, son of Kanhaiya, and his wife Shanti Devi, of Bandh village, Sajeti police station area, Kanpur. Police are speaking to local residents to gather more information about the incident and also examining CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify the vehicle and its driver, who fled the scene after the accident.

Police said the CCTV footage would help identify the culprit. “The driver reversed the vehicle and it ran over the elderly couple who were sleeping on the roadside,” said Mahesh Kumar, additional DCP, Kanpur.
