KANPUR: Security across the Industrial City has been beefed up as a precautionary measure on the eve of 17th anniversary of the
Babri Masjid demolition on December 6.
City police as well as government railway police (GRP) and railway protection force (RPF) have formulated detailed security measures mobilising their strength in order to beef up the security and strengthen surveillance at important junctions.
Sources said GRP and RPF personnel would be in a state of readiness at the Kanpur Central railway station. Anti-sabotage checks would be conducted by security personnel attached to the bomb detection and disposal squad at the Kanpur Central.
Passengers would be frisked at various check-points including exit and entry gates of the station besides on trains by GRP and RPF who would also check their luggage. Women passengers would be frisked separately by lady police constables.
Entry would be through door-frame metal detectors that would be installed at the main gates of the Kanpur Central railway station. The waiting hall and all parcels would be subjected to checks by security personnel. Sources said railway protection special force personnel would also conduct checks at the parking lots situated at the Kanpur Central railway station.
Meanwhile, various check points have been made at all the vital spots to keep a vigil on untoward activity.
"Cops are on high alert on the occasion. Suspicious activities are being monitored and checked with hitech security gadgets. We are also conducting surprise checks at guest houses, hotels, lodges, dharamshalas and cyber-cafes," said DIG BP Jogdand while talking to TOI.
Outside the Jhakarkati bus-station, police have been frisking passengers coming from across the region and other states. "Considering the nationwide terror attacks in the past, we have decided to beef up security in the Industrial City. We are doing everything which we deem necessary," Jogdand claimed. Tight security arrangements have also been made at all defence installations, various shopping malls and at Ahirwan airport in Chakeri.
However, various political outfits and Hindu organisations across the Industrial City have decided to hold protests and victory functions to mark the occasion. The local wing of Samajwadi Party has decided to observe the day as "Kala Diwas".
"December 6 will be observed as the black day. We will wear black ribbons and hold meetings at party office in Naveen Market in protest," city president, SP, Jitendra Bahadur said.
Bjarang Dal's national convener Prakash Sharma said: "We have decided to celebrate the day as "Shaurya Diwas'' (valour day) during which religious rituals will be organised."
