Three of family get 7 years in jail for dowry death
Kanpur: Additional District and Sessions Judge Court Number XII Kanpur Nagar, Parmeshwar Prasad, on Thursday convicted three members of a family—Amit Singh, Sumit Singh alias Pradeep, and Vimla to seven years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 3,000 each for dowry death. The court ordered that if the accused fail to pay the fine, they would have to spend additional two months in jail. The period they spent in jail during the trial would be adjusted in the sentence. The judicial official convicted them under Section 498/304 IPC and 3/4 Anti-Dowry Act.According to Indra Lata Shukla, Additional District Government Counsel, the complaint was filed by one Naresh Pal, who alleged that he had married his two daughters, Gudia and Vandana, to Amit and Sumit Singh on Dec 10, 2018.Naresh Pal alleged that he had spent a handsome amount, along with Rs 1 lakh cash to each son-in-law, and presented a motorcycle to Sumit Singh. However, soon after the marriage, Amit Singh started demanding a motorcycle and Rs 50,000 as dowry. When Naresh Pal expressed his inability to fulfill the demand, Amit and his family members started torturing and beating Gudia, fabricating false charges against her. On June 15, 2019, the accused confined Vandana in a room, poured kerosene oil on her, and set her ablaze. The incident was witnessed by Vandana's sister, Gudia, from the window of the room where she was locked. The accused admitted Gudia to a hospital in Lucknow, where she succumbed to severe burn injuries. On Thursday, the court held Amit Singh, Sumit Singh, and Vimla guilty of dowry death and sentenced them to seven years rigorous imprisonment.
