Three cops suspended for extortion, misconduct

Kanpur: The Commissioner of Police (CP) suspended two sub-inspectors and a head constable posted at Swaroop Nagar police station following allegations of extortion. A departmental probe has been ordered against them.
According to DCP Central Dinesh Tripathi, the incident involved Prakash Agarwal, who operates a Mini Mega Store in Swaroop Nagar, selling hookah products from his residence in Ratan Orbit Indiranagar.
On December 19, three policemen---Nagar Nigam Chowki in-charge Yashveer Singh, Arya Nagar Chowki in-charge Abisar Singh and constable Dharmendra Kumar--conducted a raid at the establishment. During the operation, they seized approximately 100 electronic cigarettes and the shop's CCTV DVR. They took the shop manager, Shikhar Tripathi, to their police post, where they demanded money and threatened imprisonment. Under duress, the shopkeeper yielded to their demands.
Subsequently, the official record showed only five e-cigarettes being seized, with a fine imposed before their release. The shop owner reported this misconduct to senior police officials, prompting Commissioner of Police Akhil Kumar to direct ACP Colonelganj TB Singh to investigate the matter. The inquiry substantiated the allegations.
Following the investigation's findings, the CP on Friday suspended all three officers after they were found culpable of the charges.
