Thief escapes from lockup, 3 suspended

Kanpur: A sub-inspector (SI) and two police constables were suspended after a thief escaped from Gwaltoli police station lockup on Tuesday morning. The suspended policemen will also face departmental inquiry for negligence.As soon as the information was received, the commissioner of police -BP Jogdand suspended three policemen including an SI and two head constables of Gwaltoli police station. The Gwaltoli police had arrested the thief -Raunak and recovered stolen items worth Rs 2 lakh from his possession on Monday night. He was brought to the police station and was lodged in a lockup in the night. Next day in the morning, the thief asked the police personnel to take him to toilet. As soon as he was taken out from the lockup, he pushed away the personnel and ran towards the Gwaltoli Sabji Mandi area. The policemen gave him a chase, but failed to nab him. The police are searching for the thief at his possible hideouts. ACP Colonelganj Mohd Akmal Khan said, “Going by the preliminary findings, the thief fled due to the negligence of the policemen identified as SI Ashok Kumar and constables Chandrashekhar and Ram Kumar who have been suspended with immediate effect by the senior officials. A team, under the supervision of the Gwaltoli police station incharge, has been constituted and raids are underway to arrest the thief.”
