Kanpur: A sub-inspector and a constable from the Kanpur Commissionerate were suspended and investigation initiated against them following allegations of assisting a criminal's escape prior to a raid.
The police personnel from Nawabganj police station, including outpost in-charge Aditya Bajpai and constable Vijay Raj, had allegedly alerted Anoop Shukla, an associate of jailed criminal Dheeraj alias Deenu Upadhyay, enabling his escape. The incident took place on June 12, with a video of the occurrence going viral on Sunday. Subsequently, the police commissioner took disciplinary action by suspending both the officers in the late evening hours. According to the information, the incident took place on June 12, when the police from Nawabganj and Kohna stations planned a raid to capture Anoop Shukla, an associate of the alleged lawyer Deenu Upadhyay alias Dheeraj, who was in jail.
Anoop Shukla was wanted in the Pintu Sengar murder case, and the police were preparing to arrest him. However, the police outpost in-charge Aditya Bajpai and constable Vijay Raj had already informed Anoop Shukla about the raid.
The CCTV footage clearly shows S-I Aditya Bajpai arriving on a bike with constable Vijay Raj to meet Anoop Shukla. In the video, Anoop is seen ready with a trolley-bag, as if he knew beforehand. The inspector signalled Anoop to escape, and he waved in response before fleeing the scene. When the police force arrived for the raid, Anoop was not found there. No one would have known about this police misconduct if the video from June 12 did not go viral. The CCTV footage went viral on social media on June 22. The suspicious actions of the S-I and constable were clearly visible in the video. As soon as the matter came to the attention of the police officials, Police Commissioner Akhil Kumar ordered an immediate investigation, considering the seriousness of the case. ACP Colonelganj conducted the investigation, which confirmed the involvement of both policemen. DCP Central Shrawan Kumar Singh stated that a viral video from June 12 surfaced, accusing police personnel of helping an accused escape during a raid.
