Kanpur: Legendary all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya repeated his old deeds with his impressive leg spin to help Sri Lankan Legends post another comprehensive win over England Legends in the Road Safety World Series-2022 match held at the Green Park stadium on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka outplayed England Legends by 7 wickets in a low scoring match and posted their second win in two ties. Now they are leading with four points in the point table.
For Sri Lanka legends, Sanath Jayasuriya played a significant role as a bowler claiming four wickets for just 3 runs in his four overs quota. He was adjudged as the man of the match. England, after being invited to bat first, posted a meagre total of 78 runs in 19 overs and Sri Lanka successfully chased the victory target losing 3 wickets in 14.3 overs.
Sri Lankan’s accurate bowling and perfect field placement tied the English Legends and they were forced to commit errors and throw their wicket. Captain Ian Bell was the highest scorer with 15 runs.
Phil Mustard was another batsman who reached double figures (14 runs.)Bell and Mustard gave their side a moderate start adding 25 runs for the first wicket partnership which was separated by Udana. Thereafter the wicket fell at regular intervals. Jayasuriya lured and deceived English batsmen from gentle leg spin. M Loye and Darran Maddy fell prey to him in his second over, and both came out from the crease to block the spin and were stumped by wicket-keeper Tharange for 8 and 2 runs respectively.
His next preys were Tim Ambrose and Dimitri Mascarenhes. Ambrose was bowled for no score and Mascarenhes was trapped in front of wicket when he tried to play on back foot. C De Silva thereafter sent back Tremlett after trapping him in front of wicket for 3. Nuwan Kulasekara picked Parry and Meaker in two successive deliveries of his third over. Parry was caught by Tharanga for 10 and Meaker by Jayaratne at deep mid-wicket for no score.
Before the start of the match, the players and the crowd kept two minutes of silence to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth of England who died recently. Thereafter, the match started around 8 minutes late as groundsmen and fourth umpire had forgotten 25-yard circle marking.
