Kanpur: Six members of the working committee of Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) have been selected unanimously after a little drama.
The election to fill six berths of the working committee was scheduled to be held on Wednesday evening. Everything was settled out but a Samajwadi Party candidate filed his nomination that pushed the officials to go for election. The SP corporator later withdrew his nomination and all the six members were elected unanimously.
The six elected members are Manoj Rathore, Nirmal Mishra, Prashant Shukla and Saurav Dev (all BJP), Mohd Amir (Congress) and Abhishek Gupta Monu (Samajwadi Party.

Among the six members, four belong to BJP, one each to Congress and Samajwadi Party. According to sources, the corporators have worked out a formula under which all the six candidates were to be selected unanimously but as soon as the proceedings began, SP corporator Manoj Pandey announced that he would contest the election of a member of the working committee.
His announcement failed to elect the selected members unanimously without election. Pandey alleged that Abhishek Gupta was working on two posts—he is leader of the party corporators in the house and also the district general secretary of the party, therefore, he should not contest the election. Abhishek Gupta countered it saying that Pandey was not in the party therefore he had no right to contest the election on the Samajwadi Party symbol. Witnessing the situation, the BJP picked one more corporator to field him as a candidate. Earlier, as per the formula it was decided that BJP would field four candidates.

When Manoj Pandey withdrew his candidature the election of six members was held unanimously. The tenure of Raghvendra Mishra, Deepak Sharma, Girish Chandra, Rashid Mahmood, Arpit Yadav and Amandeep Singh as members of the working committee has expired.
After the constitution of the working committee the house would be called to present the budget for the current financial year.
