The accident took place near Rooma railway station at 12.30am when the train was heading towards Kanpur Central railway station, officials said. Following the derailment, 16 trains were cancelled and routes of 28 others were diverted.

According to railway officials, a major tragedy was averted due to Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches which minimised the damage. The coaches which skidded off the tracks were S8, S9, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, A1, A2, HA1, an SLR (seating cum luggage rake) and the pantry car. Four of the 12 derailed coaches overturned.

PRO, NCR, Sunil Gupta said that 900 passengers of Poorva Express were sent to Delhi from Kanpur Central in two special trains. While the first special train departed at 5.45am, the second train left at 7.50am with remaining passengers.

Santosh (34), Basanti Das (75), Sadhana (45) and Ravi Kumar (37) sustained minor injuries and were given a monetary compensation of Rs 5,000. Sumit Kumar (30) and Gyanendra Chaudhary (65), who sustained serious injuries, were provided a compensation of Rs 25,000. All the injured are being treated at LLR Hospital in the city.

Senior officials, including divisional railway manager (DRM), rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue work. Sixteen ambulances and accident relief trains from Allahabad, Tundala and Kanpur were pressed into service to carry out the relief work. A 45-member team from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also assisted in the rescue operation. Officials said the New Delhi-Howrah down line was cleared while work was under way on the up line, and was likely to be restored by late evening.
