KANPUR: In a unique show of communal harmony amidst raging protests over the new citizenship law, Hindus and Muslims of Unnao are organizing a joint recitation of the

Quran

and

Ramayan

to usher in the

new year

. While Hindus will organize Qurankhwani (recitation of Quranic verses), Muslims will conduct recital of Sunderkand from Ramcharitmanas.

It’s a novel gesture by both communities to strengthen amity with a vow to protect the cow and bolster infrastructure of gaushalas.

Akhilesh Awasthi, organiser of the programme, said, “Our Muslim brethren, Nafees Khan and Najam Khan will organise Sunderkand, while me and Abhishek Shankar will hold ‘Qurankhwani’. We have been doing this for past three years to blur differences between Hindus and Muslims.” This will take place near Hardoi bridge in Motinagar area of Unnao on January 1, 2020. The joint event is the brainchild of Muslims, who felt community members should come forward to protect the cow, which is revered by Hindus. Our agenda is also toIm educate - . the . new generation,” said Najam Khan, a Muslim volunteer.

The 50-odd group of Hindus and Muslims have formed an organization — Jeev Ashray Sewa Sansthan — to look after stray cows, dogs and other animals. Awasthi said, if a cow falls ill, the organisation calls a vet. Funds for looking after cows are generated by organising ‘bheeksha’ ceremony during Sunder-Kand path, which is attended by Muslims.
