KANPUR: "More than 90 per cent of cerebral palsy patients with physical disability can lead a normal like with early diagnosis and proper medical treatment," claim paediatrics and orthopaedic surgeon and ex PGI Chandigarh, Dr JK Jain on Sunday.
Dr Jain was in the city to take part in the `National Cerebral Palsy' workshop. Speaking about the various symptoms of cerebral palsy, he said that such patients suffer from problems like speech problem, mental retardation, deafness, visual defect, perceptual problems, and convulsive disorder.
He said, cerebral palsy has been a dilemma for parents along with testing specialist regarding unpredictable outcome. There has been many fold increase in overall management of child with cerebral palsy with advancement in physiotherapy techniques and new concepts of role of paediatrics orthopaedic surgeon and rehabilitation specialist. Dr Jain said, that out of the total population of cerebral palsy only 20-30 per cent of them are mentally retarded. While the rest of them can be cured by the latest available methods and surgeries.
While, spasticity management expert from Bangalore, Dr Manish Mittal said that with proper management we can diminish the functional impairment up to great extent in most of the children. Regardless of their mental capacity, almost all patients can be taught something about self care morbidity and communication.
However, a senior paediatrician physiotherapist from Delhi, Dr Mansoor Alam claimed that those babies who are either pre mature, low birth weight and do not cry at time of delivery have 15 times more chances of falling prey to cerebral palsy.
