Locals raise a stink over waterlogged drains

KANPUR; Several areas in the city are grappling with a sever waterlogging crisis. Rawatpur residents on Monday took to streets to protest against dilapidated roads and choked drains in the city. Also, to join them in their stir were members of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, who staged a dharna at Ekta Crossing.

Blaming authorities for their lackadaisical attitude, the agitating residents demanded the civic body to get the roads constructed at the earliest.

A harried resident, Sunil Kumar, said, "Waterlogging is a perennial problem for us. During monsoon, the sewers get filled with filth and mud, while end number of potholes dot the roads."

The roads in the area have not been constructed for years at a stretch and authorities seem to turn a deaf ear to our woes, he added.

Mukul Anand, another resident of the area, said, "After rains, the muddy craters get waterlogged, making it difficult for the residents to commute. Often, the poor road condition has led to heated arguments among the motorists."

Worst affected areas are Govind Nagar and Vidhan Sabha. "Every monsoon, people have to wade through knee-deep water, which often leads to many accidents."
