Sadar Bazar Ramlila in Jhansi celebrates its centenary year
Jhansi: Sadar Bazar Ramlila, a cherished tradition that has captivated audiences across the city for decades, is celebrating its centenary year with grandeur and enthusiasm. The thirteen-day extravaganza, which started in 1925 under the patronage of Mangalsen Malhotra, a prominent industrialist whose family also pioneered the city's first private electricity distribution system, has been a beacon of cultural heritage and religious fervour. The centenary celebrations have witnessed dedication and commitment from the committee members, who have taken leave from their professional commitments to ensure that this year's Ramlila is an unforgettable experience. Narendra Kaushik, the working president, revealed that the committee operates under the guidance of the lifetime president, Ram Raja Sarkar of Orchha Dham. To enhance the allure of the performances, a renowned troupe from Vrindavan has been invited to showcase their artistic prowess.Narain Das, a 73-year-old veteran who has been associated with the Ramlila since the tender age of ten, reminisced about the early days when the event was held during the British era. He recalled a time when the stage was constructed using empty oil drums, and lanterns illuminated the performances. Despite the lack of modern amenities, the Ramlila attracted an ardent following, with people reserving their spots days in advance by placing their cots on the ground. Komal Chandra Jain, the committee's treasurer, shed light on the social hierarchy that prevailed in the past, with the elite having designated seating areas and women being seated behind a veil to maintain privacy. He acknowledged that technological advancements have enhanced the vibrancy and appeal of the Ramlila over time. Rakesh Sharma, general secretary, emphasised the committee's unwavering commitment to organise the Ramlila, even during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. As the celebrations unfold, the organisers and participants alike are united in their resolve to create an enchanting experience that will be etched in the annals of Jhansi's cultural history.
