PUKHRAYAN: Amid the rescue operation on Sunday, more than 24 villagers were praying for
Komal Singh, a passenger in her 20s who could not survive. A medical student, Komal was heading back to her native town Patna and had boarded the train from Bhopal on Saturday evening.
She was in S-2, one of the sleeper coaches that derailed. Komal's feet were stuck and she could not move. She called out for help and among the first to respond was constable Rizwan posted in
Kanpur Dehat
. "I was among the first to reach the accident site," said Rizwan, who got involved with rescue operations 5am onwards. Komal was conscious and police along with local villagers first tried to rescue the victims who were in an extremely serious condition. Meanwhile, Komal's parents learned about the crash and asked a distant relative,
Avinash Kumar of Panki, Kanpur a group D railway employee to help out.
Avinash was at the site at 10am. Though Komal could not be saved, Avinash ensured she spoke to her parents on phone and felt better in her last moments. The equipment required to pull out Komal was not in sight. When the NDRF unit finally reached the spot, they began rescue work in an aggressive manner and used air pump to separate sheets of metal.
