Pollution Control
Board officials are to be believed. They claim that
water
of the holy river at Kanpur, considered one among most-polluted stretches, is now 'healthy' enough for 'aachaman' (sipping water) during prayer rituals.
The officials said the river water quality has improved in the industrial city with the dissolved oxygen level achieving the required standard to let aquatic life thrive.
The regional pollution control board on Monday released the results of water sample testing and said river water quality has improved. A team of experts had collected samples from various points between Atal
Ghat
and Jajmau bridge.
Regional pollution officer S B Franklin told TOI, "If dissolved oxygen is between 4 to 6.5 mg/litre, then few fishes can survive, and in 6.5-9.5 range, big fishes can survive. More than 9.5 mg/litre means water is healthy. The dissolved oxygen level was 10 mg per litre, which is healthy range."
