KANPUR: As many as 250 illegal structures, including banners and hoardings, were removed by the anti-encroachment squad in a drive conducted by Kanpur Nagar Nigam (KNN) in Swarup Nagar and Arya Nagar area on Thursday.
The anti-encroachment squad also realised Rs 40,000 as user charges from a building material shop, a milk dairy and a shop owner, who had put power generator on the footpath.
Dr Anurag Singh, chief of the squad, said that the squad started its operation from Madhuraj Nursing Home in Swarup Nagar and passed from Chatwala Crossing, Arya Nagar, Sabji Mandi, Brijendra Swarup Park, residence of former mayor Anil Kumar Sharma, Rajeev Petrol Pump and back to Arya Nagar, Sabji Mandi Crossing.
During the five-hour long drive, the squad removed hoardings, banners and 14 glow-signs placed in the operation area. Several shopkeepers, on spotting the squad, removed encroachment from the road and footpath on their own and assured not to encroach the road again, he added.
A dairy running on footpath was also caught by the squad. The dairy owner later paid a sum of Rs 10,000 as user charges.
