KANPUR: A fast track court of Kanpur Nagar on Wednesday convicted a drug peddler, identified as Rajesh Tewari, under Narcotics Act and sentenced him to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh.
In his order, presiding officer BM Tripathi observed that the use of narcotics was increasing in the society and that the supply of prohibited narcotics was a crime against the society.
Therefore, the accused was not liable to get any leniency and should be punished strictly.
According to prosecution, station officer Naubasta had raided a house in Nirala Nagar on December 26, 1996 and had recovered 56.5 kg of charas from there. While two accused, Akhilesh Bajpai and Obaid, had managed to escape, the police had arrested Ram Chand, Ramesh Gupta and Rajesh Tewari from the spot.
Akhilesh had died during the trial, hence the case against him abated while Obaid, Ram Chand and Ramesh Gupta had jumped the bail. The presiding officer ordered to separate their file and punished Rajesh Tewari.
Sentenced: The additional district and session judge XIII of Kanpur Nagar, G S Pathak, on Wednesday convicted a rapist- Shivnath- and sentenced him to 10 year of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 3,000.
According to the prosecution case, the accused, a resident of Bidhanoo town, had abducted a village girl on the night of May 2001, when she was returning from a wedding ceremony, and raped her. The victim had consumed poison to end her life but was saved.
