DM finds anomalies in sewage treatment at pumping stations
KANPUR: Concerned over the deteriorating quality of water of the river Ganga, the district magistrate, Anil Kumar Sagar, along with municipal commissioner, Rajeev Sharma and other officials of Kanpur Nagar Nigam and Ganga Action Plan, carried out inspections at various pumping stations to check the treatment of sewage and tannery waste, here on Sunday.
The team also monitored the nullahs (drains) directly disposing off the sewage waste into the river.

During the inspection many anomalies were found at various pumping stations, including Wajidpur and Chabeelepurwa. Expressing his annoyance over the direct discharge of waste into the Ganga at Wajidpur Pumping Station, the DM said: "As per the norms, water should be discharged into the river only after the treatment of the tannery waste mixed with adequate proportion of sewage waste. However, at the pumping station it was found that the sewage discharge through Wajidpur nullah was comparatively less than the tannery waste."
Annoyed over the improper functioning of the Wajidpur station, Sagar gave stern directives to the officials of Nagar Nigam to conduct a survey report of the concerned pumping station and to identify the spots from where tannery waste and sewage was going directly into the river. He said, "Officials have been directed that the untapped drain must be tapped into the final sewage system and the drain should now be included under Ganga Action Plan.''
During inspection at Chabeelepurwa Pumping Station, the officials found that the 60 mm sewage line adjacent to the pumping station was overflowing and the waste was being directly disposed off into the river through Dabka nullah.
Explaining the cause for overflow, the DM said, "Since the sewer line near the Jajmau Chungi had collapsed, it affected the flow of sewage waste from Dabka nullah. However, orders have been passed to get the damaged sewer line repaired at the earliest."

Moreover, the negligence of the KNN officials was exposed when DM noticed the direct disposal of sewage waste from Seesamau nullah into the river. Notably, the waste from Seasamau nullah must be discharged and treated at Parmat or Munshipurwa Sewage Pumping Station.
The TAFCO gates which are meant to stop the flow of domestic waste into the Ganga directly, were stolen by the locals. This led to the waste being discharged directly into the river through conveyance system. "The gates were initially prepared by the KDA officials and thus the officials concerned have been directed to get the gates made soon," concluded the DM.
