KANPUR: With the objective of raising awareness about the need to preserve the environment and prevent pollution, a cycle rally was organised by the District Forest department and Society for Conservation of Nature, as part of
World Earth Day celebrations on Wednesday, in Etawah.
The rally started from Forest Guest house passed through Shastri Chauraha, Naurangabad and Pakka Talab, and concluded at Civil Lines area.
The cyclists, many of whom were students, forest department personnel and volunteers of SCON, chanted slogan 'cycle chalao paryavaran bachao' (ride the bicycle to save the environment) during the rally.
Earlier, inaugurating the rally, Divisional Forest Officer Kanhaiya Patel hailed the effort and said, "One should opt for a bicycle ride instead of using an auto-machine to preserve nature for the future. People must opt cycling for even shorter distances."
The theme of the World Earth day was "Water wonderful world". And this time too the concern of the people on the day is the climatic changes and global warming leading to rise in temperature with each passing day.
"The increasing emission of gases is plaguing the planet. For the day, we would focus on how to reduce the green house effect, discussion on global warming and how to fight water scarcity," informed Rajiv Chauhan, secretary, society for conservation of nature.
"This initiative will aware people to take part in a global movement for environment," said DFO Patel further.
The celebrations also marked plantation of saplings in and around the Forest department premises. Addressing the participants, DFO, added, "It has become need of the hour to reduce carbon and gas emission and to plant more and more trees."
Celebrated globally on April 22 every year since its launch in 1970, Earth Day focuses on current and potential environmental problems.
