Chain-snatching accused held after encounter in Orai
Kanpur: A combined police team in Jalaun’s Orai conducted an encounter operation in a chain-snatching related incident on Friday, and arrested the accused after shooting him in a leg in retaliatory firing.Police subsequently recovered the snatched gold mangalsutra and an illegal weapon from the accused during the operation.According to police, on May 27, a man submitted a written complaint at Kotwali Orai stating that his mother went out for a morning walk, near Malgodaam, during which an unidentified youth snatched her gold mangalsutra from her neck.Police registered an FIR and launched an investigation to apprehend the accused. On Friday, the cops received information over the presence of the accused on the link road of Karmer Road. Acting on the tip-off, police along with the SWAT/Surveillance team cordoned off the area.Police said that, seeing himself surrounded, the accused opened fire at the police team. In retaliatory firing, a bullet hit the leg of Shahrukh, a resident of Tufailpurwa, Indiranagar, Orai, leaving him injured. Police arrested him and sent him to hospital for treatment.
During interrogation, police said, the accused admitted that the recovered mangalsutra was the same one he snatched from the neck of an elderly woman near two days ago. He was looking to sell it but was caught by the police.Police said multiple cases were previously registered against him under various charges including theft, Arms Act, Excise Act and NDPS Act.
