KANPUR: Thousands of `jhola-chhaap doctors' (quacks) are doing roaring business in the city contrary to the claims made by the health authorities of launching drives regularly.
A 26-year-old man died in Gwaltoli area on Thursday after wrong treatment. The Bharatiya Janata Party workers staged a protest outside the Lala Lajpat Rai mortuary here on Friday over the issue.
They said that as per the health department sources, nearly 5,000 quacks are still operating in and around the city.
BJP general secretary Surendra Maithani said that the doctor who had attended the youth was bogus but no action has been yet been taken against him.
"They operate in slum areas and congested localities across the city," he said.
Senior police and administrative officials reached the spot and assured the agitators that tough action would be taken against quacks.
Chief medical officer Ashok Mishra said: "Whenever we receive complaints against quacks, we form teams and conduct raids. Fresh teams will be constituted for the task."
