KANPUR: A 28-year-old army jawan was allegedly killed in a

celebratory firing

during a wedding function, in Chakeri area of the city on late Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as Kuldeep Dikshit, a resident of Raebareli. He was posted at Ambala.

Dikshit had come to attend a marriage ceremony of his friend Shiv Prakash in Chakeri area of the city on Monday.

Following the incident that took place at Pitambara guest house in Shyamnagar area of Chakeri, police have arrested the accused identified as Sanjay Maurya, and recovered a licensed rifle allegedly belonging to the deceased, from which the shot was fired, Superintendent of Police (East) Anurag Arya said.

Kanshiram Trauma Centre

in Ramadevi area where he was declared dead on arrival.

The case has been registered under various sections including 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and various sections of the arms act.
