KANPUR: United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) announced the opening of annual competition for Fulbright-Nehru and other fellowship opportunities for the academic year 2010-2011 and expects to offer approximately 85 Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships for Indians. Outstanding Indian students, academics, teachers and professionals in all disciplines can apply, said Adam J Grotsky, executive director, USIEF in a press conference on his visit to IIT-K, on Monday.
"The US government funded Fulbright Programme was established in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
In India, the Fulbright programme was launched in 1950", he said. With the new India-US bilateral Fulbright agreement signed on July 4, 2008, the two governments are now full partners in the implementation of the Fulbright Programme in India.
He also added, that the foundation is now called United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) and awards Fulbright-Nehru and other fellowships for study, research, teaching and professional development for Indian in the US, and US citizens in India. USIEF also provides educational advising services on higher education in the US.
"Since 1950, USIEF has awarded approximately 5,000 Fulbright fellowships to Indians, of which around 271 scholars are from Uttar Pradesh (UP)," he added. USIEF administered fellowships are 2009-2010 Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Programme, 2007-08 Fulbright Master`s Fellowships for Leadership Development, East-West Center (EWC) Jefferson Fellowships Programme and East-West Center (EWC) Asia Pacific Leadership Programme, he added.
