Amid heavy rain, rising Ganga breaches warning mark in city
Kanpur: Following intermittent rain in the region and continuous release of water from Haridwar and Narora dams, river Ganga in the city is flowing above the warning mark. However, it is yet to breach the danger mark.At 8 pm the Ganga was flowing at 114.590 metre mark downstream at Ganga Barrage on Thursday. At the same time downstream of the barrage, the river was flowing at 114.520 metre mark on Wednesday. At 8 pm, the Ganga was flowing at 113.200 metre mark in Shuklaganj. At the same time the river was flowing at 113.14 metre on Wednesday. The warning mark at Shuklaganj is 113 metre. Thus, the Ganga is flowing above the warning mark and is inching closer to the danger mark which is 114 meters. The data comparison clearly shows that the river is on a rise while it is passing through Kanpur and Unnao.Since Kanpur Barrage is receiving huge quantities of water, the same is being discharged downstream. The regular discharge of water from the barrage will raise the water level of the river in Allahabad and Varanasi. On Wednesday, 418,364 cusecs of water was released into the Ganga’s downstream from the barrage and on Thursday, 426,507 cusecs was released.Meanwhile, the water has entered in about 11 villages of the Katri area. On Wednesday, 15 families were shifted from villages to the flood relief camps. Whereas, all the Ganga ghats from Bithoor to Kanpur Nagar are completely submerged in water. The water level has risen up to about 15 feet at most of the ghats. In the upstream of the Ganga, water has entered Bhopal Purwa, Baniyapurwa, Bhagwandinpurwa, Dhallapurwa, Laxmanpura, Ginni Purwa and Bharatpurwa. At the same time, downstream, water has reached Chainpurwa, Dharam Kheda, Diginapurwa and Pahadipur. Here the water has entered the houses along with the fields causing hardships to the villagers.Kanpur had received 98 mm of rainfall on Wednesday and on Thursday the city recorded another 26 mm of rain.
