2,127 students awarded degrees at IIT-Kanpur’s 56th convocation
Kanpur: A total of 2,127 students were conferred degrees during the 56th Convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) organised on Monday. Chairperson, Board of Governors (BoG), IIT-K, Dr Radhakrishnan K Koppillil presided over the ceremony, while founder and chairman emeritus, Infosys NR Narayana Murthy graced the event as the chief guest. Dr Radhakrishnan recalled IIT-K’s path-breaking initiatives and advised the students to follow the paths shown by visionary luminaries. Director of the institute, Prof Abhay Karandikar, congratulating the students, said, “This is an auspicious occasion that we get to observe every year. As we see another prolific batch graduating with flying colours, I wish them all the very best for their future endeavours.I hope each and every one of our graduating students will make a mark as future leaders transforming the nation.” He also gave a broad overview of the institute’s report.NR Narayana Murthy, also an alumnus of the institute, shared valuable insights on the nation’s progression. He said, “As I stand here, reminiscing about my cherished days at IIT-K, I am reminded of the profound responsibility we bear as educated citizens of our great nation. Let us build a mahaan India, where every child has access to education, healthcare, and opportunity.” Murthy did his M Tech from IIT-K in 1969. “Let us cultivate a culture of excellence, openness, and patriotism, and create a civilized society where public interest takes precedence over personal gain. Together, let us embark on this remarkable journey, knowing that the hopes of our nation rest upon us,” he urged. During the ceremony, 236 PhDs, 15 MTech-PhDs (joint degree), 483 MTechs, 739 BTechs, 21 MBAs, 16 MDes, 51 MS (by Research), 40 PGPEX-VLFM, 1 diploma of IIT (DIIT), 151 MSc (2-year course), 18 Double Majors, 125 dual degrees, 14 MS-PDs (MS part of the dual degree), 149 BSs, and 68 eMasters degree were awarded to the students. Farzan Adil Byramji of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department was awarded President’s Gold Medal while Ananya Gupta from the same department received the Director’s Gold Medal (4-year UG programme) and Lakshay Rastogi of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) was honoured with the Director’s Gold Medal (5-year UG program) for academic performance. Nandita Gupta from department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) was given the esteemed Ratan Swarup Memorial Prize, and Vineeth V from the Electrical Engineering (EE) dept was awarded Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Medal.On the occasion, IIT-K conferred the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree, the highest honorary academic degree from the institute, upon three distinguished personalities —Indian amateur boxer and politician MC Mary Kom, chairperson and founder Narayana Health Dr Devi Prasad Shetty and chairperson, Tata Sons Natarajan Chandrasekaran in recognition of their exemplary achievements. The graduating students were given degrees and certificates in the second session of the ceremony.
