KANPUR: A woman and her son died while three others were injured after a truck hit them and crashed into a unipole near Sheikhpur canal on Unnao-Shuklaganj road in the Kotwali police area of Unnao on Saturday night.
Three injured including the truck driver have been admitted to the district hospital.
After the accident, chaos prevailed on the Unnao-Shuklaganj road. Police later went to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
The police identified the deceased as Aasma (45) and her son Arif (27), of Shanti Nagar Mohalla. Arif used to run a vegetable shop near Sheikhpur canal.
The accident took place while Arif along with his mother Aasma were on their way back home on foot after closing the shop, when a speeding truck heading towards Shuklaganj hit them and later crashed into the unipole.
On the information of the accident, inspector Kotwali police station Rajesh Pathak reached with the force and shifted the injured to the district hospital.
The doctor however declared the mother-son duo dead, while the treatment of the injured truck driver and two others is under way.
The police later removed the truck and the damaged unipole with the help of a crane and resumed the traffic in the area.
Additional superintendent of police Shashi Shekhar Singh said, "We have booked the truck driver for causing deaths by negligence. The bodies have been shifted for postmortem, while the truck involved in the accident is being impounded."
