JODHPUR: Three female pilgrims were crushed to death and four other pilgrims were injured when a bus from Rajasthan Roadways hit them from behind in Bilara near Jodhpur on Saturday early morning. The victims belonged to Bundi and Tonk districts and had been walking to the temple of the folk deity Baba Ramdeo in Ramdeora in Jaisalmer district.
The injured were rushed to hospital in Bilara, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition is stated to be out of danger.
SHO (Bilara) Ghewar Singh said that the bus was identifed as the RSRTC Volvo bus from Jaipur depot.
"It is currently in Udaipur and will be seized after it reaches Jodhpur," said the officer. According to him, a group of pedestrian pilgrims from Bundi and Tonk districts had been heading to Ramdeora to pay obeisance to the shrine of Baba Ramdeo. "When the group reached Kharia Meethapur near Bilara at about 4.30 am, an RSRTC bus from Jaipur depot hit them from behind. Three of the pilgrims died on the spot and 4 others were injured. They were rushed to the local hospital," said the officer.
Those who died have been identified as Asha Mali (40) from Bundi, Badami Devi (35) from Tonk and Premi Devi (50) from Tonk. Among the four injured are three women.
Chairman of Rajasthan State Fair Authority, Ramesh Borana has sought a detailed report on the incident from the district magistrate of Jodhpur.
In the wake of the huge influx of pilgrims in view of the fair at Ramdeora, Borana has directed the collectors of all the districts to ensure adequate measures for the safety of the pilgrims.
It may be noted that lakhs of pilgrims, not only from various districts of the state, but also from other states throng to Ramdeora by different means during this time of the year. Many of them come as pedestrians in huge batches.
