Jodhpur: The caste panchayat in Mata Ka Than police station area of Jodhpur ostracised a man for marrying a girl outside his community. They also levied a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on the family.
The victim's family paid the fine, but the community leaders increased the penalty by an additional Rs 1 lakh. When the family refused to pay, the caste panch allegedly assaulted the man and his family.
The victim then approached police and filed a report at Mata Ka Than police station on Tuesday for ostracism and assault against seven persons of the caste panchayat. Victim Dinesh stated in his report that he had married a girl outside the community early last year. This action offended the community leaders who ostracised him and his family from the community, cut off their social connections and imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on them.
He stated that this action was taken in a panchayat meeting in reaction to his marriage, which was accepted by his family. “The panchayat held another meeting on this issue and levied additional fine of Rs 1 lakh on the family, which we refused to pay,” said Dinesh. tnn
