Jodhpur cops struggle to curb narcotics trade

Jodhpur: Jodhpur district has become a hub of narcotics smuggling, peddling, and consumption, with police having seized narcotics worth nearly Rs 8 crore and filing 35 FIRs in the past month. The seizures include drugs like MD, smack, heroin, and large quantities of poppy straw. The extent of the illicit trade can be gauged from the deaths of two young men due to overdose of drugs in the past month. The deceased included a doctor, an intern of the 2016 batch of the SN Medical College, who was found dead in his hostel room. The college administration has initiated an inquiry into the matter but has not shared the outcome of it as yet. Before this, a young man had been found dead due to overdose of narcotics at the birthday party of his friend.The illicit trade continues to thrive in the district with pouches of small quantity of narcotics easily available at every nook and corner of the city. The surge of the trade reflects in the figures of police action in the past 3 years. Total cases registered by the commissionerate police in 2021 stood at 80, which shot up in two years to 150 in 2023.Similarly, total arrests shot up to 163 from 83 and seizures to 16,228 kg from 3,176 kg in the corresponding period.While the Jodhpur Rural police registered 32 cases in 2021, this number escalated to 84 in 2023, with arrests shooting up to 114 from 61 and seizure of drugs to 11,318 kg from 2,030 kg in the corresponding period. SP (Jodhpur Rural) Dharmendra Singh Yadav said that the police have been seriously working on elimination of the drug nexus in the region. “We have recently made some big breakthroughs. Last year, we had seized 5.7 kg smack worth approximately Rs 12 crore,” said Yadav. But despite these actions, police themselves have not been spared of allegations of involvement in this nasty trade. In a public hearing by the then DCP (East) in the previous month, a former police informer, B R Choudhary, had made serious allegations against the police, claiming that sale of narcotics was unabated due to nexus of police with drug peddlers. tnn
