Jodhpur killings: Kin call off stir after job promise

Jodhpur: The kin of four persons of a family who were killed and set ablaze by a relative a day earlier, sat on a day-long dharna refusing to accept the bodies for funeral on Thursday. The fellow villagers of Chirai also joined the dharna in support of the family. By evening, the protesters reached an agreement with the administration.Joined by local political leaders, they demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh, declaring the entire land of the victims as gochar land and government job to both the sons of the victim Poonaram Jat besides severe punishment to the accused followed by detailed investigation into the matter. Finally, they agreed to call off their dharna in the evening after assurance of two jobs and maximum possible compensation and proceeded for the funeral of the deceased. “They agreed to call off dharna on Thursday evening on the assurance of jobs to the two surviving sons of Poonaram and efforts for the maximum possible compensation,” said an official. Police produced the accused Pappuram in the court on Thursday and took remand for three days. “We are investigating if any other person was involved in this heinous crime either by provoking him or helping in by some other means,” said a police official. Pappuram (19) was arrested for killing his uncle Poonaram Jat, aunt Bhanwari and their daughter-in-law Dhapu and her six-month-old daughter Manisha with an axe and set their bodies on fire in the house on Wednesday morning.
