JODHPUR : Heavy rainfall in Jodhpur damaged a 40-metre section of the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer railway track near Tinwari and Mandiyai on Wednesday morning.
The water flowing under the tracks washed away the concrete and soil from below the track, leaving it hanging in the air and disrupting railway traffic.
"About five kilometres from Tinwari towards Osian, near Mandiyai village at level crossing number C-31, the soil and ballast under the railway track were washed away due to heavy rain.
About 100 fish plates of the track were left hanging in the air due to the washing away of the soil.
We immediately suspended the traffic on the track and initiated repairs in order to resume the traffic," said a railway official.
Due to the rain, the Sabarmati Express was cancelled in the morning, and the Ranikhet Express was stopped at Osian. Several trains were affected by the situation following the cancellation of all the other trains on the route. The railway team arrived at the site and began repairing the track to restore the traffic.
Osian MLA Bhairaram Siyol also visited the site to assess the situation and informed higher authorities about the conditions. Talking to TOI, Siyol said that he had reached the spot in the morning itself and ensured that the repairing of the track was undertaken and completed in time. He said that the rain is good, but it has caused losses to the farmers, who have their crops fallen and fields submerged.
"Some houses have also collapsed. I have spoken to the chief minister and the administration to assess the loss immediately and provide relief to them as soon as possible," Siyol said.
Due to the heavy rain, fields and roads have also been submerged, causing difficulties for people in getting around. Farmers are now worried about their crops being damaged. The rainwater also wreaked havoc in some areas of Tinwari, causing waterlogging.
Three educational institutions in the area are surrounded by water, while the water entered several houses and shops. Due to the lack of proper drainage in the area, water from Osian Road and Ghevada Road submerged the areas in its vicinity.
