IIT Jodhpur prof held in digital arrest, loses ₹12L

Jodhpur: A professor of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur, Amrita Puri (35), fell victim to 'digital arrest' by cyber criminals for 12 days and lost Rs 12 lakh. The fraudsters, posing as officers from cyber crime branch of Mumbai, threatened her and gained access to her mobile phone and laptop, forcing her to keep the camera on to monitor her activities. After receiving money from her, the fraudsters released her from this ‘arrest’ on Aug 12. However, after realising that she had been swindled, she filed a report with the Karwad police station on Aug 13.According to the report submitted by Puri, she received calls from different numbers on Aug 1 wherein the caller identified himself as a police officer and claimed that a parcel addressed to her had been received in Mumbai, containing MD drugs, several passports, and credit cards.
