HC seeks govt reply on extension of liquor shop licences

Jodhpur: The government order to extend the licences of liquor shops for three months has been challenged in the high court. The court has issued notice to the state government seeking reply on the next hearing on March 27.Petition filed by a licenced liquor shop owner Monit Singhal in Bikaner said in his petition that as per the directive of the excise department, the licence period for liquor shops has been forcibly extended for three months. However, due to the expiry of the licence period for the financial year 2023-2024, the shop owners do not want to operate the shops anymore and want initiation of the fresh license process.“With Lok Sabha election round the corner, pressure is being exerted on the liquor shop owners to run shops by extending the licence period in the name of the Model Code of Conduct, which is contrary to the provisions of legality, propriety and the Excise and Alcohol Restraint Policy,” said the petitioner.The petitioner, therefore, has prayed that the order to extend the licence period should be withdrawn. Allowing the petition, Justice Nupur Bhati has issued notices and has directed the additional advocate general to submit reply of the government on the next hearing on March 27.
