Constable kills self at police station in Pali, wife booked

Jodhpur: A constable shot himself while on duty with his rifle at Audyogik Nagar police station in Pali late Tuesday night. He had retrieved the rifle from the station’s armoury.Before the incident, the deceased, 28-year-old Bharat Choudhary, had updated his WhatsApp status, saying, “Today we are here, tomorrow our memories will be there. When we won’t be, our words will be there.”Police said initial investigations suggest that tensions between him and his wife may have driven him to take the drastic step. The couple had married ten years ago but were living separately for the past eight years.Refusing to accept Choudhary’s body, his family members demanded suspension of his wife, who also serves as a constable at the women’s police station in Pali. A case has been filed against his wife, Pinku Choudhary, and his brother-in-law, Manu Choudhary, for mental harassment and abetment of suicide.SHO Pana Choudhary said constable Bharat Choudhary was on night duty at the police station on Tuesday. “Suddenly we heard the sound of firing and rushed in the direction. Bharat was lying lifeless. We took him to the hospital but he was declared dead by the doctors,” the SHO said.It was revealed that Bharat had shared the details of a house under construction at his village with his brother, along with his mobile phone password, before killing himself.Bharat’s brother, Sukhdev, said the dispute between the couple began with the birth of a daughter eight years ago, and the situation worsened when Pinku left her husband and took their daughter with her. “We had also called the panchayat of the community three times to settle the matters between the two families but in vain,” he said, adding that she also allegedly harassed him for money and jewellery.
