Braking News: BRTS comes to a grinding halt in Jodhpur

Jodhpur: Public transport service BRTS (Bus Rapid Transport System) came to a halt in Jodhpur on Monday evening. The service, rolled out to provide cheaper city transportation and break the monopoly of private city bus operators in the city, was suspended by the operator for want of funds to be released by the municipal corporation (North). The operator of the buses handed over the keys to municipal corporation on Monday evening and parked all the 20 low-floor buses at its behest.“We had been operating 20 buses in the city on various routes, but we are compelled to suspend the service as we have not received payment towards the operation. We have accomplished all the formalities related to the fitness of these buses, but the municipal corporation does not seem serious about the service,” said Praveen Kumar, operator of the buses.MLA (city) Atul Bhansali, who has been keeping watch on the development, said that he had spoken to the chief minister for appropriate directions in the matter and expressed hope that the service would be resumed soon.“I spoke to the chief minister on Tuesday about this issue. We have already got Rs. 2.5 crores released, and that amount has reached the municipal corporation, but they are not yet releasing the funds," said Bhansali, attributing the situation to the bureaucratic mess created during the previous govt.Commissioner of north municipal corporation Atul Prakash has termed these buses condemned and said that they do not hold the permission as per govt rules to ply on the roads. However, the operator has claimed to have the permit for the buses till 2028.Prakash also justified the suspension of the service of these buses in view of the upcoming electric buses for public transportation. However, Bhansali said that the introduction of electric buses is going to take a long time yet, and for that long period, it would be unjustifiable to suspend the already running service.

RTO officials in Thiruverumbur booked four private buses for skipping a bus stop near Thuvakudi in Trichy. Complaints led to an inspection where it was confirmed that the buses were avoiding the Ganesa point stop to outrun government buses. Penalties for the offence could range from Rs 3,000 to Rs 9,000 per bus.
