JAMSHEDPUR:

Kolhan University

(KU) has decided to replace its convocation gown with traditional attire for the third convocation ceremony scheduled for December. While graduating male students will wear white kurta pyjama, female students will wear white salwaar suits for the event.

KU spokesperson

A K Jha

said, "During a meeting on Monday, the convocation steering committee headed by vice chancellor (VC)

Shukla Mahanty

recommended the traditional attire. A formal announcement in this regard will be made by the VC on Wednesday."

Jha also said that the university was keen on introducing the Indian attire for the graduation ceremony in 2015 but due to the non-availability of the desired dress code, the idea had to be dropped. "Traditional convocation gown is available in abundance in the market but it requires time to arrange for the matching salwaar suit and pyjama," he said.

The VC, however, denied claims that the committee's recommendation is under the influence of a section of the students' bodies that have been demanding replacement of the gown.

Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, who had been seeking change in the attire, welcomed the varsity's move. "Last week, we had submitted a fresh memorandum to the VC, asking them to direct the students to wear Indian attire," ABVP leader and KU senate member Sonu Thakur said.

The varsity administration also announced that Governor Droupadi Murmu gave her consent to become the chief guest at the event. "Out of nearly 35,000 students who will receive graduation certificates, 4,000 of them will receive the certificate of merit," a college official said.
