JAMSHEDPUR: The Kolhan University (KU) plans to start a course on Chhau folk dance for its undergraduate students.
The university officials said Kolhan division commissioner and vice-chancellor (VC) in-charge Manoj Kumar has written a letter to chancellor C P Radhakrishnan, requesting an academic council meeting.
"The plan will be approved at the academic council meeting. Therafter, it will be passed at the syndicate meeting of the university and then sent to the higher education department," said KU spokesperson P K Pani.
In the absence of the regular VC, the nod of the chancellor is required to hold the academic council meeting, Pani said.
The university plans to start the certificate course in Chhau to formally educate the students interested in learning the traditional semi classical Indian dance form.
The spokesperson said that the constituent colleges of the KU will be eligible to start the dance course with formal approval from the university. Permission would be granted after assessing the faculties' strength and infrastructure support.
The authorities aims to start the course in the 2023-24 academic session.
Lauding the move, Chhau artist Prabhat Kumar Mahato said, "The university should have started the course in the early years of the foundation of the state, but it's never too late." He is also the secretary of the government-run Natraj Kala Kendra.
