JAMSHEDPUR: The Gurabanda police busted an inter-state gang of cow smugglers by nabbing five miscreants while they were transporting 24 head of cattle on Monday.

This is the fifth case of cattle smuggling that the East Singhbhum police has foiled in the past 10 months.

Gurabanda police station in-charge Parwez Alam said the gang was busted when they were taking the cattle from Mayurbhanj in Odisha along the Koima river bank

Four of the arrested gang members — Sukumar Danguya, 25, Puranchandra Rana, 50, Sudhanshu Singh, 50, and Jitvahan Nayak, 55 — are residents of Gurabanda in the city while the fifth accused, Subhash Sahu, 55, is from Mayurbhanj in Odisha. The Odisha man is a seller, while the four are the buyers, OC Alam said. They were involved in cattle smuggling for quite some time but caught for the first time, he said.

All five have been booked under Section 414 of IPC, sections 4, 5, 12 and 13 of the Jharkhand Bovine Animal Prohibition of Slaughter Act 2005, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960.

The rescued cattle have been shifted to a cowshed in Chakulia.
