Srinagar highway closed after landslides

Jammu: After fresh landslides on the road stretch between Ramban and Banihal, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway has been closed for vehicular traffic, officials said on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mussarat Islam, along with SSP Traffic (National Highway) Mohita Sharma, visited Dhalwas stretch on NH-44 — which has been rendered single-way due to the sinking of the road in view of heavy rains over the last few weeks — to take stock of ongoing repair work. ADC Ramban Harbans Sharma and PD NHAI, PIU Ramban, Purshottam Kumar, were also present.“NH closed for traffic. Continuous shooting stones at Shalgadi, Banihal hampering clearance work on the highway,” tweeted Sharma. She said a heavy landslide had occurred in Shalgadi in the afternoon and advised commuters to consult the traffic control unit before making travel plans.Briefing DC & SSP Traffic on traffic jams on Nashri-Chanderkote stretch, the PD NHAI said one of the two critical stretches has been restored for two-way traffic while work is on to make the second stretch at Dhalwas double carriageway soon. “To resolve the chronic issue of sinking at Dhalwas permanently, NHAI is in the process of constructing twin-tube bridges as a long-time measure,” he added.The DC advised PD NHAI to expedite the pace of work to develop a double carriageway for hassle-free movement of vehicles between Nashri & Ramban.
