Medical student booked in Srinagar over 'blasphemous' post

SRINAGAR: On Thursday, the Srinagar Police Department initiated a criminal investigation against a non-local medical student enrolled at the Srinagar Government Medical College. The student allegedly shared content on a caller app that was deemed religiously sensitive.

A police officer stated, "Srinagar Police has taken cognizance of the incident of posting of sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by one student of GMC Srinagar."

The officer confirmed that a case has been filed following the receipt of a communication from the GMC Srinagar Administration. They also urged the general public to refrain from spreading misinformation and falling victim to propaganda spread by anti-social elements.

The officer emphasized that legal action will be taken against those found to be involved in provocative acts or instigation.

The incident sparked protests at GMC Srinagar on Wednesday, with dozens of students and junior doctors demonstrating against the non-local medical student. The student allegedly posted a display picture on an app that many students considered blasphemous against the Prophet Mohammad.

In response to the incident, the administration of the medical college suspended the student pending an inquiry.
