Truck driver killed in road rage attack after 6-km chase in Rajasthan
JAISALMER: A minor road dispute escalated into a murder on the Gudamalani Road near Kharad village in Balotra district late Wednesday night.
Vishnaram, a 40-year-old truck driver from Isrol, had just completed unloading his vehicle in Barmer and was en route to his in-laws' home in Loharwa. As he turned from National Highway 68 onto Gudamalani Road, his truck allegedly brushed against a motorcycle occupied by two young men. While neither of the riders sustained any injuries, an argument ensued between them and Vishnaram.
Witnesses nearby intervened to diffuse the situation, allowing Vishnaram to continue his journey. However, the two youths were not satisfied and decided to pursue him for nearly 6-km. At a secluded location, they allegedly threw a large stone at the truck, which shattered the wind-shield and struck Vishnaram in the neck, resulting in his instant death, police said.
The helper accompanying Vishnaram sought assistance from other motorists, leading to the arrival of Dhorimanna police at the scene. A significant crowd quickly gathered, with outrage mounting as members of Vishnaram's family also arrived and protested the brutal act.
Demonstrations by the kin of deceased and the local community intensified, demanding the immediate arrest of the attackers Thursday. Their agitation forced police to negotiate with them before allowing the body to be transferred to the mortuary at Dhorimanna Hospital. Dhorimanna Station House Officer Deep Singh and others were deployed to the area in a bid to restore order.
A police investigation was underway as efforts proceeded to identify and arrest the two suspects. Police released a photo showing the accused youths on a black Hero Splendor motorcycle, with descriptions indicating both are estimated to be between 20-25 years old. One was wearing a blue printed shirt, while the other was wearing a black shirt and cap.
"This is a tragic incident, and we are working to bring the responsible individuals to justice," stated Additional SP Nitesh Arya, who along with Dy SP Sukhram Vishnoi and other police personnel, was on-site for a swift resolution to the protest.
