Jaipur: Three people, including two women, were killed and 47 others were injured when a bus collided with a truck on Jaipur-Delhi national highway-11 in Kotputli early Wednesday morning. Most of the victims, including the deceased, were residents of Ajmer.
The bus passengers were on their way to attend a religious gathering in Delhi when the accident occurred near Kanwarpura stand around 5am, a police officer said. The deceased were identified as Maya Satrawala (60), Sunita Sahu (51), and the bus driver, Vishal Sharma (59). Sharma, who hailed from Ramganj area in Jaipur, died on the spot as the front portion of the bus was completely crushed by the impact.
"Five buses filled with pilgrims left Ajmer. The trip was organised by a travel agency. The bus involved in the accident hit the truck from behind as it slowed down to turn into the service lane," a police officer said.
Kotputli district collector Kalpana Agarwal said the injured were rushed to BDM district hospital in Kotputli. Seventeen of the injured, who were in critical condition, were referred to a hospital in Jaipur for specialised treatment.
Senior district administration and police officials visited the hospital. The truck driver fled the scene but was later apprehended. He has been charged with rash and negligent driving.
