UDAIPUR: Uploading group photographs of his female students clicked at the school function a year ago on a social networking site proved consequential for a school teacher, who was badly beaten up by a group of infuriated villagers.
However, there wasn't anything obscene in the pictures but they still attracted a large number of comments which offended the locals, said sources.
The incident took place at Navania village in Vallabhnagar tehsil of the district. Kamlesh Meena, a resident of Sunderwas in Udaipur, was confronted by a group of angry villagers on Friday morning as soon as he landed at the village's bus stand where he was posted as an English teacher on probation in the government senior secondary school.
The mob started interrogating him about those pictures floating over the internet and before he could explain anything, some people started abusing and beating him up. Meena was taken to the school, where the villagers forced him to delete the pictures from his social networking profile. Tehsildar Parvat Singh Chundawat, C I Chandmal, Patwari Dalpatsingh Barhat too reached the school on being informed of the incident. Confusion prevailed as the agitated villagers insisted on immediate action against the teacher who could be rescued only after the police interfered in the scene.
Dinesh Choubisa, the school's headmaster informed about the matter to Bharat Mehta, deputy director for secondary education and an investigation officer was sent to the village to make a detailed probe in the matter.
Instead of taking up the matter with the school authorities, the residents reacted vehemently by thrashing up the lecturer. The authorities tried to pacify the angered group and assured disciplinary action. Later the education authority issued an order of APO against the lecturer who has been told to report at the education office. At the preliminary level the lecturer has been found guilty of uploading the pictures over the internet, however since I have not seen the pictures myself, cannot say if there is some obscene content in them, said Bharat Mehta. However, we will get the final report on Monday and if the accused is proved guilty, he will be suspended, he said. Meanwhile the police department has also initiated a separate probe in the matter and a case will be registered against the teacher if obscenity is proved by the pictures.
