Rajasthan records 96 electrocution cases in past six months

JAIPUR/BHILWARA: Negligence of the power department has resulted in numerous fatalities due to electrocution across the state. According to official records, 96 cases of electrocution have been reported in the past six months.

On Monday, in Nala ka Jhopda village in Bhilwara-Shahpura district, one such accident claimed the life of 19-year-old Devraj Gujar. While unloading manure from a tractor trolley in his field, Devraj came into contact with a high-tension power line, which ignited a fire. Devraj was severely burnt and succumbed to his injuries, while the tractor was reduced to ashes.

On June 17, a 40-year-old man died, and three others were injured while installing a handpump in a village when a metal pipe touched an overhead power line. On June 28 near Gararda village in Namana area of Bundi, 11 buffaloes perished after coming into contact with a transmission line. Prahlad Gurjar, a villager from Gararda, said “negligence of the power department caused the casualties.” On the same day, near Raniwara in Jalore, a farmer and his daughter were electrocuted while working in the field.

When asked about the increasing incidents of electrocution, a power department official said, “Stern warning has been issued to people to not attempt repairs on their own during power supply disruptions. If any sparks are observed or wires are found broken, it is crucial to inform the toll-free number, or the area’s engineer or GSS (grid sub-station) immediately.”

Following a complaint by Raju's brother, a case was registered under Section 304 (A) in the heartbreaking incident involving a live wire near Rosario Church.
