JAIPUR: Facing acute shortage of ICU facilities for swine flu patients,

SMS Hospital

has roped in Infectious Disease Hospital for treatment of the patients needing hospitalisation. ICUs for

swine flu patients

are fully occupied in SMS hospital during the latest H1N1 epidemic. Overburdened with swine flu patients when the city is witnessing an epidemic, SMS Hospital has developed facilities for treatment of swine flu in Infectious Disease Hospital too, which comes under SMS Medical College. In Jaipur only, nearly 1,500 persons have tested positive for swine flu in past 48 days.

“We have reserved 13-bedded ICU for swine flu patients in our hospital. Also, there is availability of 15-bedded observation ward, where we keep swine flu patients who are stable but need hospitalisation. If the condition of a patient deteriorates, we shift him immediately to ICU. But, in the recent past when the cases kept pouring, we felt shortage of ICUs,” Dr D S Meena, superintendent, SMS Hospital said.

During treatment for swine flu, when condition of a patient deteriorates, he feels breathlessness and requires immediate ventilator support. ICUs play key role in preventing swine flu mortality and its demand surges during swine flu epidemic. “We needed another 10-bed ICU facility, so we decided to rope in Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH). We have developed drug distribution counter at IDH for drugs,” said Dr Meena.

It is not for the first time when the SMS Hospital took help of IDH. In 2015 too, the state had witnessed swine flu epidemic. It was one of the worst swine flu outbreak the state had ever reported as in a whole year 6,559 persons were diagnosed with the disease. During that period, large number of patients had been treated in IDH. In the outbreak of 2015, there were 450 patients who were successfully treated with no mortality.

The IDH provides treatment for infectious diseases and other diseases requiring isolation like acute gastroenteritis, chickenpox, mumps,

measles

, diphtheria,

rabies

and

tetanus

.
