Rajasthan’s ‘Yashoda Mothers’ donate breast milk for babies in need at Barmer Hospital
JAISALMER: Devaki gave birth to Lord Krishna, but it was Yashoda who raised him with love and care. A similar story is unfolding at the Mother Milk Bank of Barmer District Hospital, where 3,523 women have become “Yashoda Mothers” by donating breast milk to save newborn babies who could not receive milk from their own mothers. The initiative has emerged as a remarkable example of compassion and humanity.
The word “mother” often represents unconditional love and sacrifice. In Barmer, many women have extended that care beyond their own children to babies they have never met. Established on March 4, 2018, the Mother Milk Bank at Barmer District Hospital has since become a symbol of kindness and support for thousands of families.
According to hospital officials, 3,523 mothers have donated breast milk so far. Through their contribution, 29,882 units of milk have been collected, helping save the lives of 3,165 newborn babies. The milk can be safely preserved for up to six months and is stored at minus 19 degrees Celsius.
Officials said no donated milk is used directly. Every sample undergoes proper screening and testing before storage. After HIV and infection screening, the milk is processed and preserved through a secure procedure to ensure it is completely safe for newborns.
Superintendent of Barmer District Hospital, Dr Hanuman Ram Choudhary, said every mother gives life to her child, but the women of Barmer have shown that motherhood goes beyond relationships. “A mother’s milk can become hope for another family as well,” he said.
ANM Manju Bhati from the Mother Milk Bank said that 220 units, equivalent to 6,600 ml of milk, are currently available in storage. She added that nearly 1,000 units were sent to Ajmer in 2018, while 12,220 units have been used for community needs. She further said that donations from 3,523 mothers have resulted in the collection of 29,882 units of breast milk so far.
