KOTA: A 35-year-old Mahant of the historic Chandrasel Math in
Rajasthan's Kota was allegedly stabbed to death by unidentified attackers, who inflicted 26 wounds on him during a late-night attack, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place around midnight at the Math under the Borkheda police station area.
The attackers allegedly entered the premises, locked one of the two Mahants inside a room and then attacked Devanand Van Mahant with sharp weapons.
The priest suffered at least 26 serious injuries and later died in hospital
Police suspect the murder may be linked to an ongoing dispute over the ownership of the trust managing the Math and the position of Mahant.
The deceased, who was originally from Sawai Madhopur, had been living at the Chandrasel Math for the last four years.
Following the post-mortem examination, several religious leaders and local residents gathered at the hospital. Family members and the religious organisation refused to take the body for the last rites until the accused are arrested.
Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully condemned the killing and said, "The criminals are shedding blood openly while the government remains a mute spectator.”
Police have launched an investigation and are working to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
